Today, I want to address one final “pothole” in the road of life. I’ve been using Psalm 106 to reveal several issues that ended up causing damage to the spiritual life of the nation of Israel. Times may have changed but the issues I have addressed still cause damage to a believer if not handled properly.
A “pothole” on the road of life is:
An erosion in the pathway that a person takes that causes damage if not properly fixed.
The final “pothole”?
Let’s find it listed in Psalm 106:
Many times He delivered them; but they rebelled in their counsel, and were brought low for their iniquity. verse 43
He gave them their request, but sent leanness into their soul. verse 15
God blessed Israel with land, prosperity, and goodness. But, it was not long after these blessings occurred that the children of Israel began to grow cold in their love for God and began to set their sights on what they believed would make them happy. Once life began to be peaceful, they became complacent. The downward turn explained in Romans 1 began to happen to them:
Although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man–and birds and four footed animals and creeping things. verses 21-23
I see the very same thing happening to America that happened to the nation of Israel.
We have been abundantly blessed. But, we have begun to serve our “blessings” and have grown cold in our love for God – even thinking we don’t need Him any longer. When you read the rest of Romans chapter one, you see what the outcome of that type of living is. Romans one looks like it was cut from today’s headlines!
God sends prosperity but it is not to be served but to serve others in the will of God. People have begun to believe the false gospel that states that money equates to godliness and when you believe that, you also believe that your money testifies of your godliness therefore it is to be kept as a “badge” of your spiritual favor!
Spending money on ourselves incessantly is still greed and I believe we will be evaluated on how we spent what God gave us. If you believe excessive money testifies to your godliness then it also testifies to the godliness of all with great wealth. We know that all people with riches are not blessed by God so what testifies that we are God’s children?
Our stewardship according to kingdom priorities.
What are kingdom priorities?
Spreading the gospel and giving to those who don’t have enough.
I have a question: How much do you need to make you happy?
Serving happiness is a “pothole” in the road of life, so keep your priorities godly and your love for God hot by using what He gives you to advance the kingdom of God. In doing so, we will avoid the “pothole” of prosperity.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV
And, I might add – free from potholes!
