To truly understand the present, it is necessary to go back to the beginning. Let me say it this way: For change to make any sense, we must know what we used to be. I want to go back to the very beginning in an effort to understand what is going on with humanity in the present.
If you believe that you are descended from fish or monkeys then you may consider your good behavior as a vast improvement over your ancestors behavior and you consider your bad behavior as simply a reflection of your genes.
But if you consider your story to be much more than that, then let’s talk for a few minutes.
Many have studied the story of Adam and Eve. It is interesting to know that, in every culture, there is a story of a first “mother and father of humanity.” In modern culture, we believe that science trumps history. But what if history tells a different story than science? Could our science be wrong? Since science is our “new religion,” we don’t believe it can be wrong. For those who are willing to open their minds to something grander than unproven theories, let’s go back to Adam and Eve.
I want to talk about how what happened in their story has affected us in order to gain an understanding of how we struggle and what God has done to win the victory.
Genesis begins with the account of our father and mother. Placed in Eden which literally means “delight,” they were protected, empowered, and supplied by God and they were growing in God.
The Bible tells us this about them:
Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Genesis 1:26-27
This statement of purpose is very important for us in understanding our nature.
We are created in the image of God according to His likeness. What does that mean?
- We are created to be a unity.
Genesis tells us that man was formed from the dust of the ground and God breathed the wind of life into him (2:7). We are a unity of both realities: earth and heaven. Our body is a product of the earth but we live only because of the breath of heaven. Without the breath of God, we are a lifeless form. Adam and Eve lived just as you and I – a product of both realities.
God is a unity of three Persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Deuteronomy 6:4
I and the Father are one. John 10:30
Neither of these scriptures say that there is One Person in the Godhead; they declare that God is a unity. Man was created with three distinct parts – body, soul, and spirit. Each of these parts is important and each affects the others. When they are not working together in unity, you have sickness that manifests spiritually, emotionally, or physically. You cannot separate these three parts and maintain life on earth. Each of these parts has its function and priority.
If they operate out of function or priority, sickness is the result. Just like each part of the Godhead has its function and even, priority, so does each of our parts.
- We are created to operate under love.
God’s creation and care for Adam and Eve reflects His love for them; it reflects who He is. Some might say, “If God is love, why did He create the tree that gave Adam and Eve the option to choose evil?”
To understand the answer to that question, you have to know what love is.
Love cannot be true love if it does not possess the aspect of choice.
Agape love, which describes godlike love is selfless in that it puts the needs of others before itself. This is not a feeling but is a component of the Spirit. It flows through you only through a choice to submit to God! You cannot have true love without having choice present!
God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 1 John 4:16
If you love me, you will keep my commandments. John 14:15
God cannot operate through us out of any other motivation than love because that is who He is, therefore, choice will always be involved in our relationship with Him and others! Life is not about keeping rules but about maintaining relationship. If that is done, all else is in order!
- We are created to be in authority.
To be created in the image of God means that we look like God; but also, we are created to represent Him. We are given authority because He has authority; it fulfills the aspect of us being created in His image but also, for us to represent Him, we must exercise authority.
Maybe these qualities partially explain why satan chose to seek fulfillment of His desire to be like God through attacking man.
Satan tempted Adam and Eve with sin through his own desire to be like God. Then he implied to them that they were not being offered the “whole picture” by God since they didn’t know evil.
What were they missing by not knowing evil? Heartache, physical sickness, death, rejection, fear, shame, guilt, etc.
When they sinned against God, they chose to change their identity from being centered in God to being centered in self.
What were their first reactions after sin?
They hid from God’s Presence and voice. They didn’t want to hear His Words any longer because of their guilt. Second, they sewed fig leaves to cover their nakedness. Now, when their identity was in God, they felt no fear of lack. They were unified (Adam and Eve) they were in agreement with God about the goodness of their created being.
Now, you know why our society is so sex crazed.
After sinning, they didn’t cover their faces; they covered their sex organs. Since their identity was no longer based in God, they reverted to how they were created for their identity; the greatest factor being their sexuality.
From then on man and woman apart from God were doomed to fear their worth and to seek it in their most basic natural identity – their sex.
The question, “Am I masculine or feminine was no longer answered by affirmation of a loving God, but through a desperate search through members of the human race – both male and female!”
We must learn from these mistakes and sins and return to God or our identity will continue to be skewed and the search to find it will be misguided and perverted by pain and the lie perpetrated by satan who baited us into this state out of his own selfish ambition.
