The Image of God

Mankind is not a product of natural selection, an evolved monkey or a composite of random atoms crashing together in just the right sequence. Mankind is a purposeful creation of God through forethought and planning.

To digress for just a moment: I know that using the term “mankind” is not politically correct and can be determined by some as being “sexist”.

But, notice the word that is translated as “man” from the Hebrew:

Man – “adam” which comes from the word “adamah” which is the word for “earth”.

The term “man” is used different ways in Genesis. It is gender nonspecific to describe male and female. It is used specifically to describe “male” and it is used collectively to describe humanity. It is a name given to describe humans individually and collectively.

This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day when God created man, He made him in the likeness of God. He created them male and female, and He blessed them and named them Man in the day when they were created Genesis 5:1-2

But, the word man is used, not to promote one sex over the other but to describe where man came from: the dirt of the earth.

Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. Genesis 2:7

The word “mankind” speaks of our origin, not our sex.

Ok, back to the original plan.

When God created man, He wanted them to have certain qualities – qualities that were unique; unlike any other living thing.

Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness

First of all, notice that the words that God used to describe Himself are plural. Later in scripture, we learn that the Godhead is made up of three individual beings that have one heart and purpose. This is the first biblical mention of the Trinity. We know the Trinity is made up of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. All three worked together in the formation of man in some way.

God’s purpose was to make mankind in His image, according to the likeness of God. Man is not a mutation of some other creature: humanity is created with God like characteristics and with a God ordained purpose.

Next time someone asks you what you think God looks like, tell them “He looks like me!”

Seriously, God was literally saying:

Let Us make man in our form, similar in makeup to God.

While the Bible says that the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters at creation, it says that God was walking in the garden in the cool of the day. Every vision of God; although mighty in glory reveal a person who has the form of a human/man.

The Bible also tells us that man was made similar in makeup to God.

The Godhead is a tripart entity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. So, God made mankind a tripart entity: spirit, soul, and body.

Now, where there is unity, there is power. The Godhead is unified in its purpose and heart. God created the three parts of mankind to work in unity just as the three parts of the Godhead work in unity.

Much of our dysfunction and disease comes from the three parts of our makeup being fractured in belief and purpose.

Our spirit yearns for communion with God; to be united with Him. When our soul, which encompasses our mind, will, and emotion operates out of step with our spirit, we experience confusion, double-mindedness, a lack of the fruit of the Spirit, etc. When our body lusts against the spirit, we experience temptation.

You might even take this a step further.

In the Godhead, the Father is the originator of the will, purposes, and plan. The Son is the One who carries out the will of the Father. The Spirit is the vehicle through which the Godhead works on the earth.

Think of this: in a healthy functioning human –

The spirit directs and leads. The soul gives assent and through the mind and the will, carries out the instructions of the spirit through faith. The physical body is the part through which man exhibits obedience to the spirit.

Can’t you just see the animals of the Garden of Eden doing what animals do and then suddenly they see man passing. Did they ever mistake the man for God?

Just wondering…..

The scripture literally says that God created man by handling him. God created man with His hands and blew into his lungs the breath of life. The first thing man ever laid eyes upon was God!

To this day, we are to maintain that face to face communion with Him!

Dysfunction rules in life when the tripart synergy of our makeup does not operate in proper order.

If you are experiencing trouble – especially as a believer, more often than not, you can find that trouble originating from a lack of unity in your nature.

Remember, you are created with great care and purpose. You are not a product of primordial ooze but created in the image of God Himself. You are unique; there is not another human on earth like you. That makes you a “masterpiece” – beyond worth. If you wonder how important you are, look at the cross. If God the Father was willing to give His Son for you, what does that say about how much you mean to Him? With a worth like that, why do we need to look to people or accomplishments for our value?

Come face to face with God today. In that moment, you will find who you are.
