The LORD will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the LORD your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom. Dueteronomy 28:13
Have you ever felt as if you were the “butt” of everyone’s joke? Maybe you feel as if you are always at the end of the line – never truly getting what you need? Maybe you feel as if the picture above is actually a self portrait?
Well, the Lord told the children of Israel that He was watching over their lives to do them good. He told them that there were long term blessings available to them if they were obedient to His word. His promise to them was an audacious one:
“If you carefully follow My commands, then you will be the head and not the tail. You will always be at the top and never at the bottom.”
This is not a “performance based” promise. The basis of what God is saying is that He has plans to bless and increase the Israelites based upon the relationship of their fathers with God and based upon their continued relationship with Him (Duet. 9:5).
The children of Israel would never be perfect and God knew that. But, if they would acknowledge when they do wrong and truly repent of their wrong, He would continue to keep them in their high position of authority and influence among the nations.
Can’t help but think of America when I write these words.
Could we have been the people Jesus was speaking of when talking to the rebellious Israelites in Matthew 21:43?
“Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.”
Maybe; maybe not.
But regardless, I do see my nation turning away from the commands of God and consequently, I see us losing our influence, authority, and status among the nations of the world. Our debt is climbing which weakens the position of our currency. Our children are falling behind in educational prowess. Studies also reveal that our children are some of the most emotionally damaged in the world. Our prison population is growing. Our respect among the nations seems to be waning.
Now, you can attribute these changes to factors other than our neglect of God and His commands but that doesn’t change the truth of what is happening. We are heading down a pathway to mediocrity and losing the exceptionalism that once characterized our land. I think we are “self-destructing”. Once you do away with ideals that founded you as a people, you must of necessity change into something else.
Ok, back to how this applies to us as individuals.
If you are tired of seeing a “butt” when you look in the mirror, I would encourage you with these words:
The one who is in a relationship with God evidenced by trusted obedience to His Word carries influence and authority. No matter what your “position” may be on the earth, you carry influence and authority with God. This influence and authority will be revealed as you pray and seek the will of God in regard to your life and purpose.
One final word of caution: Don’t make excuses for why you cannot follow God’s Word. Excuses breed a loss of power. Obedience breeds authority and influence.
“For the eyes of the LORD move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His.” 2 Chronicles 16:9
Throw your all upon the Lord! Don’t excuse why you can’t do what He says. This will change you from the tail to the head! I think you’ll like the view from that end much better!!
