Changing Your Reality

Romans 10:9-10: “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”

Our speech is very important and here is why:

  1. Our words have power.
  2. Our mouth tends toward evil speech.
  3. Our words reveal what is in our heart.
  4. Our speech can be sanctified and used mightily by God.

With that in mind, I want to talk about changing your reality. The mouth plays a role in changing your reality. Remember: words have power and can be used mightily by God and by the enemy to create your present reality and your future destiny. Knowing this can take you to the place in which you are winning the victory over the enemy on a daily basis.

To begin: let’s talk about strongholds.

A stronghold is in place when arguments against the truth of the Word of God are dictating the level of your faith.

When you just can’t seem to believe the Word of God because of some argument against it, you have a stronghold in your mind.

Strongholds will dictate your beliefs and therefore, your actions. To successfully  live in the Spirit, these arguments must be taken captive and every thought made obedient to the Word of the Lord. You don’t have to eliminate arguments against the Word, but you do have to master the art of choosing to believe the truth.

Pastor, I’ve tried that and can’t do it!

Yes, you can.

You believe a lie because you choose to. You can make a choice to believe the truth just like you can make a choice to believe a lie. You are used to believing the lie because of experience or training, but you can make the choice through the Spirit to believe something other than what you have always believed!

To change your way of thinking, you do the following two things:

  1. Ask the Holy Spirit to empower you to believe His Word.
  2. Desire a different outcome bad enough to believe differently.

To have a different experience, you must choose a different way of believing!

“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness”. Ephesians 4:22-24

Who is making the choice to change? You are! But, who is doing the changing? God is! Your decision plays a role in changing your reality through tearing down strongholds that dictate your behavior.

Now, let’s look at the process mentioned in Romans 10:9-10 again.

Most of us know this scripture as one that we share with a person who is seeking salvation. Believe in your heart and confess with your mouth and you will be saved.

Truly, this process does bring change in current and future reality and destiny. But, the process does not change for us when seeking to grow or alter life after we are saved. If this process changed a sinner into a saint, it can bring about transformation in those who are already born again! If it caused you to pass from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of Light, it can change your current reality into what God desires it to be: one which lines up with the Word of God!

The spiritual process that changes your reality involves two familiar components:

  1. Your confession/your mouth
  2. Your heart

“For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:10

Let’s start with the heart.

The Bible states this truth:

“For as he (a man) thinks in his heart, so is he.” Proverbs 23:7

You will never rise in behavior above what your heart believes is your destiny.

If you believe you will always lose, you will. If you believe you don’t deserve good things from God, you won’t have them.

Pastor, that’s my experience. How can I believe for something different?

A belief is “hard-wired” in you by an experience. You are not believing in “fairy stories” when you choose to believe God over a lie. Jesus did die for you! Go to the cross! See His love! That is real! Allow that experience to replace your ungodly experiences!

We are not changed by “ the power of positive thinking” but by the power of God’s indwelling Spirit!

Whatever is possible in God is possible through us! But, if you choose a belief that does not line up with God’s Word, you can go to church all your life and you will still live below what you see in the Bible. You don’t believe God’s Word because you deserve it; you believe it because God is good! You believe it because it is God’s will for you! You accept it because, by accepting it, you are accepting God’s love for you!

Believing God’s Word in your heart changes your inner man through the submission of your life to His!

Your physical life will never change until your spiritual life changes! You can confess the Word all day long but you will still have what you believe for in your heart. Your heart must work together with your mouth to bring about a change in your reality.

The second important component to change is your mouth.

Belief in your heart releases the power of the Holy Spirit within. Confession of the Word releases the power of the Holy Spirit into your physical reality.

To confess means to agree with God.

As said earlier, you can speak words you don’t believe all day and things won’t change for you. You first must believe in your heart and then – and only then will your mouth release true confession or agreement with God.

God’s spoken Word released into your world has creative power to change things and make them line up with God’s will.

“So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11

When we believe God’s Word above our experiences and confess it with our lips, we release the power to change our reality!
