In our Savior, Jesus Christ, we find the culmination of all three of the primary ministry roles of the Old Testament: Prophet – Priest – King.
John 4:19: “The woman said to Him (Jesus), ‘Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.”
Jesus said about Himself in Matthew 13:57: “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.”
As far as the priesthood of Christ goes, the Bible tells us:
“Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God let us hold fast our confession.” Hebrews 4:14
The New Testament (and Old for that matter) have several places where we are told of Jesus’ kingly authority. One of my favorites is:
“Now I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war.” Verse 16 – “And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.” Revelation 19:11,16
All three of these powerful roles are fulfilled in One – the Lord Jesus Christ!!
But, since we are His children and are filled with the same Spirit that rested upon Him, we also function, through His Spirit in the same three roles that He functions in. No, I didn’t say that we are worthy of praise or are the Savior of the world or are the King of Kings or are God; I said that since His Spirit lives within us, we will witness His ministry of prophet, priest, and king manifest through our lives.
How do these three roles manifest through us?
Priest – We derive our primary understanding of the priesthood from the Old Testament. While the Old Testament is a “type” and “shadow” of that which is to come, it still clearly defines the functions of the priesthood of Christ and therefore, defines the role of the priesthood of the believer in whose Spirit Christ lives. The primary responsibilities of the priest are as follows:
Know God’s word. Follow the regulations and schedules commanded by the Word. Provide intercession for the people.
This is a simplified definition but still pretty accurate. Are you fulfilling the responsibilities of the priesthood of the believer in your life? If not, then Christ’s Spirit is not truly manifesting in your life in its truest form. It takes cooperation from you to flow in this anointing.
1 Peter 2:9: “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”
Prophet – The primary responsibilities of the prophet are the following:
Understand the people and time in which you live. Hear from God. Know how to apply the changeless word of God to a changing people.
1 Corinthians 14:5: “I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied.”
Are you flowing in the anointing of a prophet in your generation?
King – The primary responsibilities of a king are as follows:
Manage and maintain the domain of the kingdom. Protect the people, property, and integrity of the kingdom from all enemies. Exercise authority for the benefit of the royal domain.
Revelation 1:5: “To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.”
Are you exercising your kingly authority in a way that reflects the Spirit of God?
Remember this about being a king:
You cannot rule over what you have not conquered.
Are you losing a battle to something in your life? Is satan mocking the kingship of Jesus exercised through you because of a stronghold of some sort?
How do you exercise authority in such situations?
Authority is released through the absolute lordship of Christ in our lives and through unflinching belief in His word! You can’t have one without the other! Jesus is not Lord if you do not believe His word!
Do you want to see the three ministry roles of Christ manifest in your own life?
Then, you must believe His word above your circumstances, your past failures, and your future prospects! If you hang onto your faith in God’s word, you HAVE won the victory! You are not waiting for victory – it is already won! We fight against a stubborn foe but make no mistake…he is a defeated one!
Don’t allow anything to stop you from flowing in the three ministry roles of the Spirit. It is your calling and your destiny!
