“This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. This is love for God: to obey his commands.” 1 John 5:2-3
You have people in your life that you want to help – you want to see them happy and living productive lives. What is the best way to see your goal accomplished?
What is the best way to show the people around you that you love them? That you are invested in their welfare and are committed to their success?
Should you do everything that they want you to do for them? While that may seem to be loving and while that may please the person you love, the Bible tells us that, in fact that is not the pathway which reveals true love. 1 John tells us that we can know that we are truly loving those around us by loving God and carrying out His commands.
Many times, the people we love want us to do certain things for them and, yet the Bible directs us to do something completely different in the situation. Is it love to do what the people want? Well, not if it is not best for them! Who knows what is best for the people we love? Who knows what will bring them success and remove all obstacles to their growth?
Therefore, when confronted with a choice between doing something that will please the one I love and doing what God directs me to do, the most loving action is to obey God!
Even if it displeases my loved one!
Do you fear that if you don’t do everything that pleases your loved one that they will conclude that you don’t love them? Many people have that fear. In truth, you either love them or you don’t – it is an undeniable in your heart. If we love someone, why would we do something for them that would ultimately lead to their harm or destruction?
If we love them, we won’t!
Love for others and love for God are both manifest the same way: through obedience to God’s word.
Don’t allow others to challenge the truth. If you love someone, the truth is revealed in your obedience to God. They may not recognize your love now, but they will later.
Make the tough choice to love. You’ll be glad you did!
