Doing Good to Be Good

“A certain ruler asked him, ‘Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?'” Luke 18:18

To the rich young ruler, life was about doing good things to prove that you are good. But, the young ruler had a question:

“How do you know for certain that you’ve done enough?”

Jesus response simply was this: “Life IS about the finding and retaining of treasure, just not the kind that the world seeks after. You will know that it is enough when you have “sold the farm” for the treasure hidden in it. You will  be certain when you find the pearl of great price and sell everything else to possess it.”

The ruler’s dependence on “good deeds” protected him from selling everything! He could do “good” and not have to be completely transformed.

Isn’t that what we often look for? A way in which we can “make it” without truly having to give up everything our flesh desires?

The transformation of man – actually his death – is what God is looking for and is obtained when we “sell” everything for that one thing – the only thing that matters to God.

The rich young ruler went away sad when it was made certain that Jesus was not willing to bend on His demand. If Jesus would have bent, He would have knowingly sent the young man to his death!

Peter said to Jesus, “We have left everything to follow you!”

Jesus said to those listening: “If you leave everything – even that which is most dear to make Me first – you will receive many times more than what you gave up in this life and in the life to come……you will have it all!!”

Jesus’ demand will n0t change because if He softens His stance, He condemns you and He loves you too much for that!
