“Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven.'” Matthew 18:21-22
Forgiveness…….How difficult is that!
Forgiveness is something that runs directly against our nature. Yet, Jesus had the audacity to say that unless we forgive others as He has forgiven us, we will not be forgiven of our sins!
How could he ask something of us; especially something so difficult?
Because it is the essence of God’s nature and the foundation of salvation. God came to forgive sinners. We all have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God. Our salvation is grounded in the heart of God to forgive every sin – no exceptions, no sin too grievous to forgive.
When we are born again, we receive that same Spirit that resides upon Jesus. What we have received (forgiveness) we have the power and the moral obligation to release to others – no matter how grievous their sin against us.
If you choose not to forgive, you are the one paying the price – you are the one cutting off the freedom that Jesus bought for you. You are the one not flowing in the same Spirit that forgave you.
I have to forgive just like you do. I know it can be difficult. Feelings are feelings, but decisions dictate my destiny. Decide today to forgive. Let God handle the details. Don’t allow anything to tell you that you cannot do it. You have the same Spirit on you that was on Jesus. He will do it through you if you decide to submit to Him.
