How much dog poo-poo in your milkshake makes it too corrupt to drink? What if only a tiny drop of dog droppings was added to a milkshake you intended to drink; would that be too much for you?
How much dog poo-poo in our doctrine makes it too corrupt to serve? Many who would never dream of drinking a milkshake with a drop of dog poo-poo added do not mind consuming doctrine with a little poo-poo added!
1 Timothy 1:3-7: “As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than God’s work–which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.”
Paul commanded Timothy to attack motivations that corrupt doctrine. He said that the goal was to restore the motivation to love. Then, he revealed to Timothy the ingredients that must be present for pure and true doctrine which is motivated by love to be taught:
A pure heart – Selfishness must be removed or doctrine is corrupted.
A good conscience – Shame, guilt, condemnation must be removed or doctrine is corrupted.
A sincere faith – Dependence upon things other than Jesus must be removed or doctrine is corrupted.
Within this scripture, we find the poo-poo that corrupts our teachings. If these things are present, doctrine automatically becomes a product of works, law, self promotion, manipulation, etc., etc. etc.
Paul told Titus in chapter 1:15 – “To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny Him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.”
God, is there a way we can be self-sufficient, self-indulgent, unwilling to associate with those we consider “lower” than us, prejudiced, worshipers of our lifestyle and at the same time, be followers of You, dead to ourselves and alive to Christ Jesus?
What is the doctrine you are being taught, the doctrine you believe teaching you about the question I just asked? Examine yourselves to see if you are in the faith, test yourselves-and get rid of the poo-poo!!
