An Eye for an Eye

You have heard that it was said, “Eye for eye, tooth for tooth,” but I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right check, turn to him the other also. Matthew 5:38

What a stupid way to solve a disagreement!!! UNTIL – you begin to understand what caused the problem in the first place. What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don’t get it. You kill and covet but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. James 4:1

Conventional, worldly wisdom says that you stop selfishness with more selfishness: someone attacks you, you attack them back. The problem is that what we sow increases in measure. Selfishness will not die if we continue to sow its seeds!

Jesus says to defeat selfishness, we defuse it and change the atmosphere by sowing love, which by the way is the complete opposite of selfishness.

Winning the battle is not the end all be all. We must win through godly methods. Or, we can walk away with what we want and leave behind more damage than when the disagreement began.

The key to winning is having God fight for you, so you must fight in His armor and with His weaponry. James goes on to say in verse 6, God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Submit yourselves then to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Verse 10 – Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.
